MANDELA'S CONDITION

Former South African leader Nelson Mandela is in a stable condition, his granddaughter says, though he remains critical. Ndileka Mandela said the 94-year-old's family were taking comfort from messages of support from the public. Meanwhile his daughter Makaziwe said he was "still there" and responding to touch. South Africa's first black president has been in hospital since 8 June with a lung infection. His health has worsened in recent days, prompting current President Jacob Zuma to cancel a foreign visit. He has now arrived back at the hospital. Emotional crowds continue to gather outside the Pretoria hospital. They have been adding messages of support for Mr Mandela, known by his clan name Madiba. Correspondents say South Africans now seem resigned to the prospect of his death.

How do I get coverage? Mobile phone networks are made up of thousands of masts, which are located all over the UK. At the top of each mast, there's an antenna. This is the part that sends and receives signals. Each antenna creates an area of coverage between 100 metres and 10 kilometres. The most powerful antennas are called macrocells, and they're located on tall masts on top of buildings or in fields. They create a large area of coverage. Busy areas are boosted with smaller microcells, which are located inside things like road signs, flag...

And how do we know?  Throughout history, humans have used a variety of techniques and methods to help them answer the questions 'How far?' and 'How big?' He was able to measure the distance by looking at the shadow of the Earth on the Moon during a lunar eclipse.  It was Edmund Halley, famous for predicting the return of the comet that bears his name, who three centuries ago found a way to measure the distance to the Sun and to the planet Venus. He knew that the planet Venus would very rarely, every 121 years, pass directly between the Earth and ...
